Should You Clean Old Gold or Silver Coins Before Selling?
Should You Clean Old Gold or Silver Coins Before Selling?
An inherited coin can look dull, spotted, or dark around the edges. It is natural to think a brighter coin will bring a better offer. For collectible coins, cleaning can remove original surface character or leave marks that buyers and grading services recognize. The safer preparation is usually to leave the coin as it is.
Why surfaces matter
Collectors assess more than the date and amount of metal. Luster, wear, toning, and evidence of alteration can affect demand. Rubbing a coin with a cloth may cause fine hairlines; chemical treatment may change its appearance. A cleaned coin is not automatically worthless, but its market can differ from that of an otherwise comparable original coin.
What if the coin is just bullion?
Some common coins are evaluated chiefly for metal content or a widely traded product premium. Even then, cleaning is unnecessary for an evaluation and can complicate identification. Keep coins in their capsules, flips, albums, or certified holders. Do not remove a graded coin from its slab.
How to bring a collection
Separate obvious groups only if it is easy to do so. Keep any old envelopes, labels, and inventory notes, and take photos of both sides of coins that appear unusual. Bring the full collection to a dealer who can distinguish common silver, bullion, and pieces with possible collector value.
